I first came to Sicily in 2004 in order to teach English in a language school in Trapani. After one year I moved to Catania where I spent two further years teaching English and where I met my partner who is Sicilian. After 7 years in the UK we recently returned to Sicily to live.
At times frustrating and confusing, Sicily is also fascinating and beautiful. Although I feel it necessary to reveal the good, bad and damn right ugly I will try and focus mainly on the positives because Sicily is so often misunderstood and badly represented. When you say Sicily most people think of the Mafia and this is unfortunate as it is an island which has so much to offer both the visitor and resident. It has an abundance of important archaeological sites, its natural beauty is outstanding and it will fully enrich all of your senses in so many ways. Sicilian people are themselves most intriguing, many Sicilians struggle to comprehend the actions of their fellow men so for the outsider it can be even more difficult, even impossible to try and understand them, yet they are for the most part very warm and welcoming. It is hard not to fall in love with the island but to understand it, well that’s another thing altogether.
So through this blog I will try to give you a little sense of Sicily because sometimes, quite frankly, it just doesn’t make any sense.
